As 2024 draws to an end, I have looked over my reading habits for the year and like everyone, I wish I had read more, but here are a few which I have liked and loved over the year.
The Basketball Diaries - Jim Carroll :: What a life!
Good Material - Dolly Alderton :: Love a tragic man, but loved the ending more!
Lessons In Chemistry - Bonnie Garmus :: Long live Elizabeth Zott! We need more uncompromising women.
The Night Of The Hunter - Davis Grubb :: A random grab from an airport shop, but couldn't read it fast enough. Truly terrifying.
High Fidelity - Nick Hornby :: Hornby is the king of writing miserable men, and I'm here for it every time, but Rob Fleming was a special level of sad and awful. I loved it.
Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman :: What a story. A mind-boggling level of world building and the Marquis De Carabas is one of my favourite characters of all time.
The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath :: A book I wish I'd read sooner, and I wish young girls could read. It was made all the more devastating when I read the acknowledgements. What a remarkable woman.
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow - Gabrielle Zevin
There are not enough words to describe what this book truly meant to me. The characters, the male/female friendship, the love of gaming, the difficulty of creation. Chefs Kiss. Sam and Sadie will forever be special to me, along with Marx and Ichigo. Thank you, Gabrielle Zevin!
