I joined a reading group last year to encourage me to read outside my comfort zone. There were a few thrillers, a sickly Christmas story, and a couple of mysteries. But this month brought something entirely new. It’s fair to say I’m a cynic. When I grew up, I would watch rom-coms if they were mostly comedy, because I just couldn’t stomach full romance. It had to be a thread rather than the dominant theme, and my book habits followed a similar route––until The Seven Year Slip.
This was my April book club read, and I had zero interest in it until I began. I finished this book within three days! I just couldn’t put it down. When I wasn’t reading it, I would think about it, and even after finishing it I felt utterly shocked at myself. I was in love with the format, and I want to thank Ashley Poston. Above everything I’ve read in 2025, this is my favourite so far, and I cannot see anything topping it anytime soon. She’s become an auto-author. From now on, I’ll auto-read anything she puts out because I NEED to read more love stories like this. She’s opened up an entirely new genre to me with the story of Iwan and Lemon. It was honestly so warming it melted my cynical heart. Here’s to finding more rom-coms of realistic, lovable people clumsily figuring love out. I’m here for it.
